Keep God and His Sword Out of Tennessee
A lot of politicians like to invoke their spirituality and personal religious beliefs in the debate because let’s face it, trying to wrap their head around physical concepts makes their brain hurt.
One state, however, actually forbids religious people and extremely non-religious people from bringing God into the Capitol.
Tennessee’s Constitution includes a special provision that forbids clergymen and atheists from holding public office.
The law regarding clergy specifically forbids them from holding an office in either House of the Legislature and forbids atheists from holding “any office in the civil department of this State.” That means Jesus can’t run for Senator in Tennessee.
The provision also forbids “duelists” from holding any office in the state of Tennessee. That means Capt. Hook can’t run for Senator in Tennessee. It’s a shame. He would have done wonders with the “one-handed” vote.
