Something Smelly is Floating in This Pool
You’ve got to love the logic of the law. That’s why no one has any love for it.
It’s not only often confusing and outdated, it can also be ridiculously personal, like this dumb law in California (where else?) that outlaws office betting pools, according to the Los Angeles Times.
Under the old law, people could be charged with a misdemeanor for simply putting as little as a quarter into an office pool on things like the weekend football game, the World Series or the first person to eat the donut that’s been sitting behind the office refrigerator for six months.
Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger (new motto: now even more Schwarzeneggey!) heard of the law and decided enough was enough, so he signed a bill that reduced the law to an “infraction” that carries a $250 fine. It’s just as well. All of California’s team suck, so you’re better off not betting on them in the first place. Schwarzenegger did you a favor.
